Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
